20 May 2009
Well finally, someone has sent in some news !! Not as if I should start making news items up .. (ask Alvin about that one ..). You active Subs fans know what is happening usually before Charlie, so old news is er ... old news, anyway, I've neglected writing stuff here for a while, been putting it on the message board instead. I'll try and be a good boy in the future and write it here instead ... Now to catch up ... There was some concern regarding the health of Steve Roberts, he is fine now, had a bit of a bad turn ie heart stopped working properly, told me not to make a big deal of it, so I wont.
Paul Slack has indeed being playing bass for the Subs once more, no doubt we'll see him again pretty soon.....
now to the USA - Warped tour will feature Mr Gibbs, Garratt, Harper + Oliver, a sort of british old school stage this year for several dates (see tour dates for more info ..)
And now Tony Beesley has sent in this ...
Just to let you know that 'Our Generation' is now available via me at rotherpunk@aol.com or Beesleytony4@aol.com and will also be made available shortly in reputable Book stores as well as select indie stores..£19.99
'Our Generation' is the unique and very first account of the Punk generation of Sheffield and the local region told by the author and over 150 different and varied voices of the era. From the pre - Punk days and all the way through the summer of hate of 1977 Punk and beyond, the story takes in the many classic gigs, the clothes worn and searches for Identity, the groups formed and broken, the fans, the records, the violence and laughs along with many photos, flyers, rare tickets and memorabilia of the era. The books main focal point is the Punk explosion and its effect on the local youth, but also takes in Mod revivalists, 2-tone fans, New Romantics and passing anecdotes from some of the many well known Punk groups who have played at famous local venues such as Doncaster Outlook, Sheffield Limit club, Rotherham Windmill and Sheffield Top rank. Meetings with some of the most noted Punk generation musicians such as Joe Strummer, Paul Weller and Sid Vicious are also refreshingly told by fans in their own words.
This story is about a time of euphoric excitement and life changing experiences when a proportion of our local youth cast caution to the wind and found themselves in the middle of the most explosive, controversial and influential musical revolution since pop music began...this is Sheffield's experience of that time...the story of 'Our Generation'
The book is 444 pages and full of many fantastic Rare and exclusive photographs from private collections, along with countless unique memories and experiences from those who were there at the time. Includes words from Charlie Harper (UK Subs), TV Smith (The Adverts), Jo Callis (The Rezillos) and many more musicians, fans, Punk Rockers, Mod Revivalists, New Romantics and Post-Punk fans. No corporations involved…this is a 'Do it yourself' Punk Rock production and the very first of its kind!

SPEEDFREAKS CANCELLED
Mick @ Speedfreaks says ....."I am sorry to announce that Speedfreaks 4 has had to be cancelled.
Due to slow ticket sales there is no option but to cancel the event.
The bank situation and economy has really hit home and the event receipts will fall short of the cost of staging the show by quite a large amount of
money which would have put me out of business and possibly bankrupted me, even the late addition of Cock Sparrer to the bill hasn't brought in
enough extra ticket sales to cover the deficit. I left it as long as possible before making this difficult decision to see if there would be an upturn in the situation.
But by cancelling the event and refunding ticket monies The Speedfreaks Ball will live to fight another day I would like to thank everybody for their support and help
in promoting Speedfreaks.
This does not affect any other Speedfreaks shows and all other shows are still going ahead.
Please return your booking receipt, or paypal receipt, to the address below for a full refund and please include your full postal address. Any bookings from outside the U.K will be refunded via paypal once we have received your receipt.

There are a few rumours going around on various forums and message boards that Charlie has died. This is of course NOT true.
Charlie is ALIVE and on tour in Germany at the moment.
Obviously everyone in the band and the large worldwide fanbase is upset and angered when rumours of this nature are uneccessarily started.

03 January 2008
Well not really much news apart from the fact that the Subs are heading into Europe for their usual winter tour.
Dates are up, there are some gaps, if you want to book them, it's still not too late!
Also I think a mention of the reunion tour in december is in order.
I was at 6 gigs, fantastic time, met a lot of good people, and took lots of photo's.
The idea is to produce a "documentary" book of the tour, with some trivia, quotes, gigography and I need people to
send in a written piece to me for possible inclusion. Something along the line of .... Why are the UK Subs what they are?
Why have they still got a following after all these years?
When did you first/last see them play?
Anything UK Subs related you want to say.
Please send it to me: Paul Mileman, Mellombolgen 71, 1157 Oslo. Norway.
I am also looking for people who were there at "the beginning" - Whitton crew - as well as everyone who used to follow the Subs in the 78 - 80 period.
I am also looking for photographs of the band during this period that you have taken. You can email me at: paul@uksubs.co.uk

Had a request from Tony Hill – author of If The Kids Are United (‘the working-class Fever Pitch’) published
by Victor Gollancz and reprinted by Orion!
He's from a Nottinghamshire pit village called Jacksdale,
once home to legendary (and infamous during the punk years) music venue The Grey Topper.
Sadly the building is currently being demolished, so he and a local historian are trying to put together the
history of the place (it started out as a picture palace/music hall).
It seems a bit surreal now that the likes of Bill Haley, The Sweet, early Adam and the Ants, Simple Minds,
The UK Subs, Toyah, The Ruts (shortly before singer Malcolm Owen died of a drug overdose)
and Ultravox played in a mining village.
He’d love to ask any of the UK Subs if they can remember playing there, or hear from fans who saw them there.
Ideally he wants any copies of a tour poster (or ticket) with The Grey Topper on. Email
UK Subs webwith any such stuff

The directors of a new film have sent this in ....
Punk’s Not Dead is a new independent documentary film
that includes UK Subs in a who’s who of faces and music
from the punk world from 1976 to the present. It may be the
biggest film ever made about punk, set to be released
on the 30th anniversary of the movement. We’re proud
of this DIY project and are beginning our push to get
the word out to everyone we know who will be
interested.
I suggest you all go and have a look -

Punk’s Not Dead is an independent documentary film about punk rock—specifically, about how punk has emerged from the
underground to the mainstream. The documentary is told through the voices of the band members,
the indie labels and the kids, faithfully reflecting their perspectives.
The film will be a colorful collage of the punk rock scene from the past and present.
Interviews, concerts, rehearsals, studio recordings, music videos, stock footage and
photographs will be incorporated to create an informative and entertaining documentary film.
It's still under construction, but the website is up and gives a greater insight into what is happening. The website is

After the very disappointing, but necessary decision last week to cancel the Hemsby festival, we have been trying our best to pull something out of the hat and we can now confirm that there will be a gig on Sunday 20th March.
The ‘Victims of Punk Aid’ gig will be at the Royal Standard pub in Walthamstow, London. Doors will be 5.30, and first band is on at 6pm with all bands off stage by 11pm in time for last trains. Entry is a tiny £6.
UK Subs, Menace, Anoraks, Los Paraliticos and Dirty Love are all giving their services for the evening. There will also be a great local band doing their bit and we have special guest Jayne County as compere.
Together with stalls and of course, the Punk Aid - albeit rather downsized - Raffle at the end of the night, it should be a great gig. We really hope you can make it.
After not being able to have the festival, we would dearly like to make some contribution towards the charities we help, and we can’t do that without your support, so come along if you can and enjoy a great night out!

A couple of things .... Firstly, the Voodoo Lounge gig on the 4th of December has been cancelled.
The Subs hope to get out to Eire in early 2005. Watch this space.
Secondly, there is a new "
Rockin' Bones videozine" compilation DVD out now,
features a couple of Subs tracks and an interview with Charlie. Loads of other
punk stuff (14 bands altogether) from the likes of The Casualties, Dead Kennedys,
The Briefs and The Visitors amongst others. It's shot like the old Flipside video's and this DVD is great effort and a fantastic insight into the bands that are around at the moment. For further info go to Rockin Bones web site -
www.rockinbones.net.
Lastly, the line up for the Xmas tour is - Charlie - vocals, Bri Slutcher (replaced by Clara sometimes) - bass, Alan Campbell - guitar, Jay - drums.
Nicky, Jason and Alvin will be back for the European tour which is scheduled for the Jan/Feb months of 2005

I have had confirmation that the upcoming US tour will be the UK Subs last!
There are plans to play the odd US show in the future, but a full scale tour is unlikely to
happen.
The Subs have toured the US since 1979 and have notched up more than 35 USA tours,
more than any other UK band.
So if you haven't seen the Subs and you live in the US, you'd better hurry up!
